Your braces may be history, but retainers are forever! If you’ve had orthodontic treatment, you should wear a retainer not just after your braces are removed but for the rest of your life. Retainers keep your teeth from returning to their original position. Since this is one of the most important parts of your orthodontic treatment you will need to know how to properly clean your retainer.

When cleaning your retainers, we recommend cleaning them at least once a day. Twice a day won’t hurt!

Use your regular toothbrush/toothpaste and brush with warm to cold water. NEVER use hot water as it will distort them! Baking Soda works well too. Make a paste of baking soda and water (distilled or filtered is best), and brush your retainer with your toothbrush.

Soak them at least once a month in Retainer Brite, SonicBrite, Efferdent or Polident – This will help minimize the tarter build up.

These cleaning instructions are the same for mouth guards, splints and aligners.
Putting the retainer case in the dish washer is usually ok unless noted otherwise on the case.

**CAUTION: Never put the retainer in the dishwasher to sterilize them-they will melt!
